EXHIBITION | China Through the Looking Glass

Opening May 7th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a fascinating exhibition organized by The Costume Institute with assistance from the Department of Asian Art.  The show is called China: Through the Looking Glass and it’s following the infamous Met Gala which is carrying the same theme this year.  I’m dying to see what gorgeous gowns the celebrities choose for this occasion. The focus of the exhibit is on how fashion designers of the West World, such as Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel; have been so greatly influence by art, film and culture of the Far East.  You can see the stark resemblance in silhouettes, in color, in characters and in choice of subject.  Dresses forming the shape of centuries old porcelain vases; the intense hues of reds, yellows and golds; and the use of Chinese characters, patterns and familiar symbols.  Such an interesting idea curated by these two departments.
